A celebrated figure in dance accompaniment in New York City since 1992, Steven Mitchell has accompanied and/or performed for the most recognized dance organizations: American Ballet Theater, Ballet Academy East, Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, and the Jose Limon Dance Company. In addition, he accompanied for Jacques D’Amboise and the National Dance Institute.
Steven holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Houghton College, NY, a Master of Music in Piano Performance and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. From 1992-1998 he was a staff pianist for Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education; while there he performed with the Boston Ballet Company and orchestra in pieces of Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff. From 2000-2002 he held the position of Company Pianist for Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and today remains in the keyboard chair for the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra.
Steven has lectured to dance teachers around the world in conjunction with David Howard teaching seminars in seminars in Caracas, VZ; Mexico City and Monterrey, MX; Oslo, Norway; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and in such places in the U.S. as Salt Lake City, UT; Jackson, MS; San Diego, CA; Orange County, CA; Kalamazoo, MI; and in New York City. He was class pianist for the Columbia Pictures film Center Stage.
In 2002, Steven’s musical accompaniments became available worldwide when he began his own business of playing, developing, recording, and distributing CD’s of practical and inspiring class music. Visit http://www.danceables.com for more information.
